Boca Raton originally occupied by the Tequesta tribe, the area was largely uninhabited after the Indigenous people were cleared from the area by the Spanish and the British. During the Florida land boom of the 1920s, several investors turned Boca Raton into a resort town and many buildings in the area have a Spanish Colonial Revival architectural theme, initially inspired by Addison Mizner, a resort architect who heavily influenced the city’s early development.
